How to set up a wireless fencing hall

Upgrade your fencing space by combining the visibility of traditional scoring boxes with the freedom of modern wireless technology. With Calibur, you no longer need to spend time installing heavy scoring equipment or fixing broken floor/ceiling cables. It provides an elegant, clean solution that makes setting up and maintaining your pistes faster and easier than ever. Your fencers can focus entirely on their bout, while you enjoy a modern, clutter-free room.
Every fencing hall is set up a bit differently. Take a look at the common layouts below, find the one that matches your circumstances best, and see how easy it is to bring Calibur into your setup!

Tabletop fencing scoring machines

The layout
The scorebox is placed on a central table or stand between two pistes, at the middle line. Classic competition layout, convenient for referees. Repeater lights may be linked to the scoring machine for better visibility for fencers.
How to use Calibur
Place the Calibur Relay on the table and link it to the scoring machine with regular floor cable or épée body wire pieces. Keep the Pocket Boxes on the same table; fencers will be able to easily find, turn on and connect them.
Note that the Relays need a continuous power supply throughout the sessions. We recommend adding an extra extension cord to keep all cables organized under the table. This will also ensure that you can charge the Pocket Boxes overnight.
Like this, you eliminate the need for floor cables and reels, and ultimately build a cleaner space with more freedom of movement on and off the piste.

Ceiling-mounted scoring machines

The layout
The scoring machines are suspended from the ceiling, with either reels or ceiling cables for the fencers to use. Allows a larger range of activities in the hall compared to the tabletop option, but it's still referee-friendly.
How to use Calibur
We recommend mounting the Calibur Relays to one end of the pistes and linking it to corresponding scoring machine with ceiling cables. This way, the only modification you will have to make on your layout is to have both ends of the ceiling cable go in the same side of the piste (at the end of which the Relay is located).
We also advise installing a case for Pocket Boxes right next to the Relay. This ensures that fencers can easily find the corresponding Pocket Box to each strip and each side.

Repeater lights connected to the main scoring machine will stay functional, as well as remote controls to control the scoreboard. Note that the Relays have to be connected to a power source while in use, and it is reasonable to leave some extra power sockets so that the Pocket Boxes can be charged right where they will be used the next session.
With Calibur, you can say goodbye to wire and reel repairs and dangling ceiling cables.

Wall-mounted scoring machines

The layout
The fencing scoring machine is fixed at one end of the piste, and a repeater unit is placed at the opposite end so fencers can see the scores from anywhere.
Very economic setup, allowing easy handling of the scoring machines (e.g. switching weapon modes) and maximizing the number of pistes that fit in the hall.
Body wires usually go into ceiling cables, sometimes reels.
How to use Calibur
We recommend attaching the Calibur Relay right underneath the main scoring machine, along with a holder for Pocket Boxes. Linking the Relay to the scoring machine is extremely easy, you can use a short piece of floor/ceiling cables, or even épée body wires.
Like this, you eliminate ceiling cables and reels while keeping your dual-display layout and the easy access to the scoring machine.

Scoring machine hub with repeaters

The layout
All scoring boxes are installed together on a single central hub or closet in the room, with two repeaters extended to the ends of every piste. Usually paired with ceiling cable set-ups.
It's a good alternative to the wall-mounted scoring machine set-up, leaving more room on the walls for other training gear, like mirrors, wall bars or practice targets.
How to use Calibur
Option 1:

Place a Relay next to each fencing scoring machine at the central hub and link them with pieces of floor cables or épée body wires. We highly recommend installing Pocket Box holders to the ends of the pistes since fencers will naturally look to connect over there. It's important to connect the Pocket Boxes to the Relays at the start of each training, before placing them in the holders. For this reason, we advise charging the Pocket Boxes near the Relays and the central scoring machine hub.
Please note that the Relays need to be powered throughout the sessions and that the connection between the Calibur devices will break in case the central hub is in a metal closet.
This option is budget-friendly and completely replaces the need for ceiling cables and reels, but keeping the optimal visibility provided by the repeater lights.

Mount the Calibur Relays to the end of the pistes and link them to corresponding scoring machines with ceiling cables.
If you already have ceiling cables installed, the only modification you will have to make on your layout is to have both ends of the ceiling cable go in the same side of the piste (at the end of which the Relay is located). Similarly to option one, we recommend storing the Pocket Boxes in holders at the end of the piste (next to the Relay).
This option is a little harder to set up, but ultimately it is more intuitive for fencers.

Building a new fencing hall

If you are equipping a brand-new fencing room and want to build it around Calibur from day one, you have great flexibility. Based on your budget, we recommend the following options:
Budget-friendly option
Place simple, affordable and portable stands between the pistes, and get a phone stand for each side. Like this, athletes can use their own phones or tablets as displays while fencing, and you only need to invest in Pocket Boxes - one pair for each piste.
This is highly recommended for school sessions and small clubs: the portable stands can ideally be used for other purposes as well (box jumps, bulgarian squats) before or after the bouts, and the set-up can be assembled and moved in seconds. Later on, you can upgrade the visibility of the scoring machines by getting simple tablets that are only used for club bouts.
In conclusion: very affordable, very flexible, but not the most elegant solution. For clubs who work with professionals, we recommend the option below.
Premium option
Install wall-mounted scoring machines with repeaters at the other end of the piste with Calibur Relays mounted neatly beneath them. Scoring machines and repeaters should be
This gives your club a high-tech, futuristic look with 100% open floor space for safe, uninterrupted movement.
