Fancy a week in one of the world's strongest fencing fortresses? Come to the international training camp organized by our partner, Békessy Béla Fencing Club in Debrecen! The training camp is meant to be a challenging experience for advanced and high level fencers in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. The staff includes olympic level coaches, a physiotherapist and entrepreneurs in the fencing world. The camp takes place between August 3rd and 9th, 2026.

Fencing Coaches

The camp’s professional program is led by a team of specialists who understand every side of high-level épée. It is a rare opportunity to learn from:

Dr. Gábor Salamon: A highly respected coach with Olympic and World Championship medals in his portfolio.

Solt Serra: The Head Coach of the Swedish women’s épée team, bringing top-tier international experience to the floor.

Daniel Chacón: 3-weapon fencing coach, with several Pan-American medalist students. His fencing is a well-selected mix of the world's leading fencing schools.

Jakob Fagerstedt: A youth specialist from Djurgårdens IF, member of Swedish senior national team, 3-times national champion.

They are going to be there to work with you on your individual goals, helping you refine your technique and tactical decision-making during the sessions.

The schedule of the week

The program is built around two sessions per day to get the most out of the day and ensure proper regeneration between the trainings. This formula ensures you can work on technical details and put into practice new tactical elements as well.

Debrecen is more than just Hungary’s second-largest city; it is a welcoming place where history meets a modern lifestyle. Getting there is very convenient, as the Debrecen International Airport connects the city with several European destinations. If you arrive via Budapest, the city is only a 2-hour drive or a comfortable InterCity train ride away. Beyond the sport, the region is a fantastic destination for sightseeing: you can explore the cozy streets of the city center, visit the famous Reformed Great Church, or relax in the local thermal baths. For those seeking adventure, the nearby Hortobágy National Park offers a unique glimpse into the Hungarian "Puszta," a UNESCO World Heritage site that feels like a journey back in time.

Training sessions will be held at the Békessy Béla Fencing Club, located on Faraktár Street, within walking distance of the city center. The club is one of the most modern facilities in Hungary, featuring high-quality professional strips and a spacious training area. The building is also fully accessible for para-fencers. This professional environment, combined with the club's great location, provides the perfect setting for the camp.

Who can join?

This camp is designed for dedicated fencers who are ready for an intensive week of work. To ensure the best experience for everyone, the following criteria apply:

● Age: Fencers born in 2010 or earlier.
● Experience: At least 3 years of fencing experience is required.
● Inclusivity: The camp is proud to welcome wheelchair fencers as well!
● Supervision: Please be aware that the club is only responsible for minors during the training sessions.

Comment est-ce de grandir dans les bidonvilles ?

Mburu a grandi dans l'un des quartiers les plus difficiles de Nairobi. Ces zones sont confrontées à de graves lacunes : de nombreuses maisons sont mal construites, les eaux usées s'écoulent à ciel ouvert dans les rues, l'eau potable est difficile à trouver et les épidémies sont fréquentes. La vie économique est incertaine : la plupart des gens dépendent d'emplois informels et instables qui leur rapportent bien moins que ce qui leur permettrait de sortir de la pauvreté. Dans ce contexte, les jeunes ont très peu de perspectives d'avenir : leur scolarité est souvent interrompue, les emplois sont rares et, pour beaucoup, rejoindre des gangs locaux ou des groupes de voleurs semble être la seule voie possible.

Le moment de transition

À cette époque, Mburu pensait également que la rue était la seule voie possible pour lui. Lors d'un vol, Mburu a été blessé par balle, ce qui l'a amené à remettre en question les choix qui l'avaient conduit là. Ce fut pour lui un moment de réflexion et le début d'une quête pour trouver quelque chose de différent, quelque chose qui pourrait donner un sens à sa vie au-delà de la rue. Avec le recul, il a déclaré : « Je me suis dit que Dieu avait un but et une raison pour moi ». Plus tard, il a rencontré Okalo, qui l'a initié à l'escrime. Mburu s'est entraîné avec détermination pendant des mois jusqu'à obtenir une bourse pour la FIE Coaching Academy. Après avoir terminé sa formation, il a décidé d'aider les jeunes, de leur offrir la même chance que l'escrime lui avait donnée.

Livres, lames et construction d'un avenir meilleur

Grâce à Tsavora Fencing Mtaani, il a créé un espace sûr où les jeunes athlètes peuvent apprendre non seulement les techniques de parade ou de fente, mais aussi les valeurs qui définissent le véritable esprit de l'escrime : discipline, respect et intégrité. Bon nombre des jeunes escrimeurs qu'il entraîne aujourd'hui viennent du même milieu que celui qu'il a lui-même connu autrefois. Comme le dit Mburu : « Ils me regardent et me disent : « Si maître Mburu a réussi, moi aussi je peux y arriver. » » Ces mots le motivent chaque jour dans son travail. Il a également lancé un programme appelé Books and Blades, qui vise à aider les jeunes athlètes non seulement dans l'escrime, mais aussi à rester engagés dans leurs études.

Grâce à Tsavora Fencing, ils organisent la première East African Champions Fencing League, un événement unique qui allie escrime et divertissement. Mais au-delà du spectacle, ils ont un objectif plus large : leur but est de redynamiser les clubs d'escrime régionaux au Rwanda, au Kenya et en Ouganda. Tous les profits de l'événement servent à soutenir les clubs d'escrime disposant de peu de ressources, offrant ainsi aux jeunes athlètes des opportunités qu'ils n'auraient peut-être jamais eues autrement.

L'escrime a le pouvoir de changer des vies, même dans les endroits où les jeunes sont défavorisés.
